What, where and how we fill trolleys has changed

[14 August] From the early days of pandemic panic buying, to a new style of socially distanced shopping, what we’re putting in our trolleys has changed, but so has where and how we’re filling those trolleys.

Constant demand for online groceries

More people than ever are using online shopping to fill a virtual trolley. From Monday 3rd August, Tesco scrapped its peak and off-peak pricing model for click and collect and home delivery orders, moving to a flat pricing structure. Tesco has said it’s brought in the change because it is facing constant demand thought the week rather than less and more popular times.

36% plan to self-cater staycations

Footfall through convenience retailers remains lower than the same period in 2019, however this is offset by a higher than normal basket total, a trend we’ve seen throughout the pandemic. Convenience retailers are boosted by the increased staycation market, with more than a third of us intending to solely self-cater while on holiday.

The latest Lumina Intelligence Channel Pulse data found 25% of UK adults were planning to go on holiday in the UK this summer. As a result, the convenience market is set to see increased volumes of footfall, with 85% of holidaymakers planning on doing some self-catering, and 36% planning on not eating out at all and only self-catering.
